CJEE Reviews

Instructions for Authors

What are the expectations of a CJEE book/media* reviewer?

Reviewers are chosen for their experience, perspective and knowledge that they will bring to the review of their book/media. As such, the editors respect the judgment of the reviewers. The review editors do expect the reviewers to follow the following technical guidelines:

  • the preferred length for the review is approximately 750 words
  • the review is completed following the style & spelling guidelines of APA 6
  • the review is submitted within sixty days of the receipt of the book (this is approximate and open to negotiation)
  • the reviewer is prepared to edit the review based on the editors’ suggestions
  • these edits are completed and the updated copy is returned within fifteen days

The most important point in developing a book/media review is to address the Journal’s readership: the academic, and increasingly, the practitioner community in the interdisciplinary field of environmental education. The review should consider:

  • The intended audience for the book and who would find it useful;
  • The background of the author;
  • The main ideas and major objectives of the book and how effectively these are accomplished;
  • The soundness of methods and information sources used;
  • The context or impetus for the book/media - - political controversy, review research or policy, etc.;
  • A comparison with other works on this subject;
  • Constructive comments about the strength and areas of improvement of the book;
  • For edited books: dominant themes with reference to specific chapters as appropriate; and implications of the book for research, policy, practice, or theory.

Have fun with it! Generous scholarship is important to us here at the CJEE - as such, critiques must be reserved for the content of the book/media. Your review should be accessible (that is, relatively jargon-free), and useful to our readership.

*Media include films, curriculum materials, or other media that intersect with environmental education and the readership of CJEE.
